    I Hate the Word Sales

A gin martini handed to you before you ask for one, with no menu, no list and no pitch

"We're the best salespeople, we're the best promoters," she said, recalling a caterer who told her she needed a sales team. "I hate the word sales." What she has instead is an instinct for showing up in the right rooms and talking to whoever is standing in them — not because it will generate business that day.

Why this cocktail? She refuses the word sales. The drink arrives right without ever being pitched.

    The Story

At her first industry meeting at Lincoln Center she arrived with a leather folder and a two-page résumé and no business card, was asked for one at the front desk, and decided she had already failed — then talked to everyone in the room anyway. This drink follows the same rule: nothing is offered for sale, nothing is described, the glass simply arrives correct and cold because someone paid attention before you walked in.
