Point at the Iceberg
A bracing, clarifying cocktail over a single clear block — the read nobody wanted to hear, expensively and unrewardingly right
She told Wizard the print franchise was the fatal flaw and it needed a real online presence. They called it insubordination and let her go. Not long after, they closed.
Why this cocktail? She pointed at the iceberg, got fired for it, and was proven right. This bracing, crystal-clear pour is the read nobody wanted to hear.
The Story
In March 2008, into the teeth of the collapse, she was let go — not for the economy, but for reading the room and saying what she saw. She'd watched the independent comic shops closing in droves as the print-first owners refused to move to digital, and she told the company the franchise it was clutching was the fatal flaw. The owners decided the executive who wouldn't stop pointing at the iceberg was insubordinate. She was right, expensively and unrewardingly right — the usual condition of the person who reads the room first. This cocktail is that clarity: cold, sharp, unsentimental, served over one clear block of ice.
