The Ramp Agent
Gin & tonic with cucumber, juniper and lime — the airport hours that quietly built a career
He loaded bags through high school and college, worked the O'Hare ticket counter, and, to this day, will hang around an airport for pleasure.
Why this cocktail? The airport built him before the boardroom did. This clean, bright G&T is the ramp shift and the ticket counter in a glass.
The Story
Welsh's real biography starts on the ramp, not in a boardroom. Free passes from a brother at BWI turned him into a passenger young; the loader job made him an operator; O'Hare gave him a marriage. This is the drink for those hours — clean, cold, bright, the kind of glass you can nurse through a long window at a gate while watching planes and thinking about where you want to go next.
