A Hauf & A Hauf
A wee dram of Scotch beside a half-pint of Tennent's lager — Scotland's oldest ritual
For the pub order that built the Tartan Army: a whisky and a beer, side by side
The Story
Before the songs, before the stadium, there's the round. A hauf-and-a-hauf is the Scottish handshake: a half-pint of Tennent's lager (or a nutty Belhaven ale, if you're feeling Edinburgh) set next to a wee dram of blended Scotch. You sip the whisky, you chase it with the beer, and by the second round you know everyone's name. It's the drink that turns a bar into a room, and a room into a Tartan Army.
Ingredients
- Half-pint Tennent's lager or Belhaven Best ale
- 1 oz blended Scotch whisky (Famous Grouse or similar)
- Chilled half-pint glass
- Whisky nosing glass
Preparation
- 1.Pour the lager into a chilled half-pint glass with a proper foam head.
- 2.Pour the Scotch neat into a small nosing glass beside it.
- 3.Serve together on a coaster — dram first, then the beer chaser.
- 4.Raise both and say slàinte mhath before the first sip.
