The Alternative Mayor
A 1" glazed heirloom carrot round on a bed of neighborhood herbs and cracked pepper — the destination job reframed as civic leadership
The destination CEO is the alternative mayor — on stage twenty-four hours a day, sometimes a bigger public profile than the elected mayor next door. It's why a lot of people don't want the job anymore.
Why this bite? The destination CEO is the alternative mayor — the job now belongs to the neighborhood. This glazed root and neighborhood herbs is that reframing on a plate.
The Story
Welsh's most quietly radical move was to retire his own best line. In Chicago he had defined success as gridlock; today he argues the modern destination CEO succeeds only if the brand aligns with the neighborhoods and the residents, not just the ballroom. The job is now the alternative mayor's — political skin, economist's fluency, producer's showmanship — and it is why he says the next generation is drifting away from it. This bite is that reframing: a humble, glazed root grown in a community garden, set on herbs the neighborhood recognizes, seasoned so plainly that the room and not the plate is the point.
